Oppo X 2021: Event unveils rollable smartphone concept

Oppo is no stranger to shaking up the status quo of mobile design. The Oppo N1 had a revolving camera back in 2013, followed by the Find X of 2018 that got rid of the notch thanks to its slide-out cameras. With its Oppo X 2021 rollable concept phone, the manufacturer is now yet again redefining the standards.

With this device, the main wow factor is that it does not have a fixed display size as it can switch between 6.7 and 7.4-inches diagonally, which offers developers and consumers new opportunities. Oppo offers an example of clicking a video connection that then results in the screen being changed on its own for the aspect ratio.

The monitor is 6.7-inches in its basic form. It is an OLED panel with a patented laminate Warp Track high-strength screen portion that sits below the actual display and at its thinnest point is just 0.1 mm thick. On the outer layer of the show, we don’t get details on the actual content, but it is probably some kind of plastic.

Oppo X 2021 Expanded & Contracted…

Oppo managed to achieve a zero-crease screen thanks to its dual rolling motors underneath the monitor, something that existing foldable are still struggling to solve. With equally distributed force on both halves, the motors can retract and extend the show.

A dynamic frame containing a fixed frame and a rotating one put on top is also included in the Oppo X 2021. Thanks to the metal support layers underneath the display, the 2-in-1 plate design without section gaps helps prevent the screen from collapsing.

For Oppo X 2021, there are no real release plans that we should look forward to. Currently, in its current shape, the phone would possibly never launch. We will definitely, however, be on the lookout for market-ready product announcements that exploit their technology.
